LogMeIn.com

One of the nuances of work and travel in the modern age is having access to files when you need them.

While there are many different ways to easily transport files these days, working with the software you know -- working on the computer you know -- isn't always a possibility.

A friend of mine recently helped me find an amazing solution: logmein.com

For starters, the service is free; there's an upgrade version available but I haven't needed it.

What it does is allows you to access another computer remotely from wherever you are.

I fell into this after complaining that I was constantly running up to my parents' house every time something went wrong with their machine.

The software allowed me to test settings, run updates and solve problems without physically being there.

Later my wife used it while we were in New York to access her files and work on AutoCad, even though her laptop was sitting at home in Toronto.

All she needed was my machine (any machine actually) and an Internet connection.

It is an amazing service that has changed the way I think about having backup files and carrying files with me when I travel.

I no longer have to worry that I won't be able to do something or access something on the road.

I highly recommend it -- because it works and equally importantly because it's free.

And no, logmein.com did not pay me to espouse their virtues. They just created something that's easy to use and works great.
